Why buy local produce?

The Fantastic Taste of freshly picked produce

• Freshly picked and consumed produce is full of flavour, vibrant color, vitamins and nutrients all at there highest concentration. Eat whilst its fresh for maximum taste and nutritional benefits.

Nutritional values

• Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is the best way to get many of the vitamins and nutrients our body's need to remain healthy, fight off infections and help reduce the risk of disease. Once harvested the precious vitamins and nutrients begin decreasing affected by time, temperature, sun exposure, moisture and excessive handling. It's important to work out roughly how old produce is at the time of purchase as every second counts; this is not always easy as no information is usually available at the point of sale making buying local produce the safest option. For example a lettuce shipped from New Zealand is already around 3 -5 days old before it even gets to the supermarket shelf, yet a local lettuce could be in a salad on your table that same day.

Preserving Genetic Diversity

• Due to large commercial farms growing only a small amount of the currently available hybrid fruits and vegetables, a huge reduction to the world's genetic diversity is occurring. This problem is ever increasing with the closure of every family farm loosing generations of knowledge and crop diversity enforcing the need to support local farms.
  In comparison the smaller family owned farms grow larger numbers of hybrid varieties passed down through generations to extend their growing season whilst providing the possible diversity needed in our ever changing climate to keep fresh fruit and vegetables an option for future generations to come.

Transporting and Importing Produce

• By reducing the distance our food travels this provides major benefits to our environment, as land, sea and air distribution currently relay on petroleum products which give off harmful emissions attributing to global warming.
